Nitrogen Fertilizer Response of Cotton in Rotation with Summer Legumes

Philip J. Bauer, USDA-ARS, 2611 West Lucas Street, Florence, SC 29501

A three-year study was conducted near Florence, South Carolina to evaluate the potential of using Crotolaria juncea or cowpeas as an N source for cotton.  Four N rates ranging from 0 to 150 lbs N per acre were applied to the cotton. Summer legume biomass and N content, soil N content during the winter, cotton leaf N, and cotton yield were measured. The data suggest that those these two legumes can produce ample N in a relatively short time during the summer, most is lost through the winter and is not available to a succeeding cotton crop.
