Reduced Predation on Lepidopteran Eggs Due to the Boll Weevil Eradication Program in South Texas, 2005-2006

R. S. Pfannenstiel, USDA-ARS, 2413 E. Hwy 83, Weslaco, TX 78596

The Boll Weevil Eradication program in south Texas was initiated during the summer of 2005 and pesticide sprays were applied to cotton fields' twice in late summer 2005 and several times during the 2006 season. Predation and predator densities were reduced in 2006 from previous dates from 2000 to 2005 when cotton was for the most part unsprayed. Predation relative to an adjacent soybean control increased significantly in 2006 relative to previous years. The increase in relative predation was partially due to the explosion in population of an exotic predator. This predator was observed and cotton and without the pesticide inputs would most likely have been common in cotton. Predation was reduced thoughout the field despite the use of only edge sprays in 2006.
