Lygus hesperus is a key pest on cotton in the San Joaquin Valley. The relationship between fruit retention and Lygus densities is well understood in Upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) but less so in Pima cotton (G. barbadense). A study was undertaken in 2006 to evaluate fruit retention patterns on Pima as affected by the presence of Lygus. Two fields with differing population densities of Lygus were monitored weekly for Lygus and fruit retention. Each fruiting site was recorded by position on the branch from the stem and each branch was recorded in its position from the cotyledon scar. Each fruit was categorized by stage of development or missing. Results will be presented that contrast the sites.
