Using the Reactive Dye Method to Attach Antibacterial Compounds to Cotton

David T.W. Chun and Gary R. Gamble. USDA-ARS, Cotton Quality Research Station, P.O. Box 792, Clemson, SC 29633

The antibacterial compounds used were Sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. A version of the reactive dye method was used to react these two compounds chemically with the cotton fiber molecule. The two compounds were activated and then covalently bonded to cotton fabric, either separately or together in a 1:1 ratio. The treated fabrics were then assayed for antibacterial properties that may have been imparted by addition of these antibacterial compounds. The antibacterial assay used was a modification of the “AATCC Test Method 100-1999, Antibacterial Finishes on Textile Materials: Assessment of”, which was reported on at the 2006 Beltwide Proceedings. The results of the assay will be reported.
