Global Expansion of Instrument Cotton Classification

James L. Knowlton, USDA, AMS, Cotton Program, 3275 Appling Rd., Memphis, TN 38133

Cotton classification by instrument is growing in popularity around the cotton producing world. China is creating an instrument based cotton classification system that will soon operate more HVI's and class more cotton than USDA. Other cotton producing countries including Brazil, Australia and Uzbekistan are well on their way to 100% instrument based cotton classification. Other international initiatives include the actions of the International Cotton Advisory Committee's (ICAC) Task Force on Commercial Standardization of Instrument Testing of Cotton (CSITC) to standardize instrument classing and to evaluate performance of participating instrument classification laboratories.
