Effects of Surface Application of Nitrogen Fertilizer Sources on Cotton Yield and Quality in a Conservation Tillage System

Charles H. Burmester, Auburn University, P.O. Box 159, Belle Mina, AL 35615

Surface application of four granular nitrogen (N) fertilizer sources, ammonium nitrate, urea, urea coated with agrotain, and urea coated with calcium thiosulfate, were compared on cotton grown in a conservation tillage system. The cotton was no-tilled into a killed residue of wheat in mid- April. Fertilizer rates of 60 and 90 pound of N were applied with each product in the four replication study. No rainfall occurred for seven days following treatment. Cotton leaf samples were taken during the third week of bloom for nutrient analysis. Nodes above white bloom counts were taken to determine maturity differences. Cotton yield and quality were determined from all plots.
