Worldwide Market for natural Fibers in Nonwovens

Rory Holmes, The Association of the Nonwoven Fabrics Industry, PO Box 1288, Cary, NC 27512-1288

Cotton, especially bleached cotton, has been available for nonwoven production for years. It has not found much favor because of its purchase price and the difficulty in processing cotton. Improvements in nonwoven processes and filtration systems have overcome some of these barriers. Now with the loss of the last domestic rayon producer in North America, cotton may have a much brighter future in nonwovens. Many natural fibers can be processed through the variety of carded nonwoven technologies; however, their utilization is quite small. Natural fibers present their own unique difficulties in processing and bonding. A variety of fibers and fabrics will be discussed as well as their unique properties.
