Moisture and maturity relationships in cotton fiber: comparison of several cultivars grown in MS and GA in 2003

Marie-Alice Rousselle and Alfred D. French. Southern Regional Research Center, PO Box 19687, 1100 Robert E. Lee Blvd, New Orleans, LA 70179

Water of imbibition and moisture regain analyses were carried out on cotton fiber that was part of the Cotton Variety Spinning Trials organized by Drs. McAlister and Meridith, on which a wide variety of other analyses have been carried out. This is an extension of the work reported at the 2005 conference. Again, it was found that the amount of sorption was greatest for the varieties having low maturity, suggesting that a predominance of primary wall material would give, on average, a more open structure that has room for moisture.
