The Need for Useable Classing Data in International Textile Operations

Vikki B. Martin, Cotton Incorporated, 6399 Weston Parkway, Cary, NC 27513

With nearly 70% of all U.S. cotton being exported it is critical that we maintain a competitive advantage in the international marketplace. In addition to our reputation for low contamination, one major advantage of U.S. cotton is our capability of providing reliable, unbiased, third party classing data. The U.S. is currently the only country where classing data is universally available on every bale. In visiting with critical customers of U.S. cotton throughout Southeast Asia here are their observations on high volume instrument data, their frustrations, needs and desires and a look at whether their requests and expectations are realistic.
