Spindle Design Effects on Cotton Quality

Kevin D. Baker, USDA, Agricultural Research Service, SW Cotton Ginning Research Lab, 300 E. College Dr., P.O. Box 578, Mesilla Park, NM 88047 and S. Ed Hughs, USDA-ARS, Southwestern Cotton Ginning Research Laboratory, PO Box 578, 300 E. College Dr., Las Cruces, NM 88047.

A laboratory study using a straight spindle from a Rust picker and a tapered, barbed spindle from a Case-IH picker was conducted. Operating speeds of 2000, 3000, and 4000 rpm were used in the study, and fiber moisure content was approximately 8%. The picked bolls from two upland varieties were ginned on a laboratory-size (breeder's) saw gin, while those from a Pima variety were ginned on a similarly sized roller gin. Samples will be analyzed using HVI and AFIS test equipment, with particular emphasis on differences in neps and seed coat fragments.
