Viewpoint of a Crop Consultant: Performance of ProActTM in Cotton

Carl Hobbs, Carl Hobbs Ag Consulting, Ashburn, GA

Product assessment by crop protection professionals in commercial situations is a significant component of developing new products and technologies in agriculture.

ProActTM, a new plant health regulator, is based on Harp-N-TekTM, a proprietary harpin protein technology from EDEN BIOSCIENCE. ProAct, a foliar-applied product, is a second-generation harpin product that contains 1% harpinαβ. Harpin proteins activate internal defense and growth mechanisms in plants, which can improve plant vigor, stamina, nutrient uptake, and reproductive growth and initiate natural self-defense mechanisms. These effects culminate in improved overall plant health and yield potential.

Early-season applications of ProAct to commercial fields were evaluated in field trials conducted in 2004 and 2005. Plant growth, maturity measurements, and yield were assessed and recorded. Observations from a series of field trials in Georgia are reported.
