This paper discusses trash identification in cotton comparing machine vision based systems measurements to other methods. The Cotton Trash Identification System (CTIS) uses a digital camera (CTIS-Camera) or a scanner (CTIS-Scanner) to acquire the cotton images. Trash measurements from CTIS-Camera and CTIS-Scanner systems are compared with AFIS, Shirley Analyzer, and High Volume Instrumentation (HVI) Trashmeter measurements. Trash measurements of thermally defoliated cotton, are compared with chemically defoliated cotton and untreated cotton. Trash distribution histograms measurements are analyzed for particle distribution to evaluate any differences based on the defoliation techniques. The analysis also include trash measurements of cotton ginned with different seed cotton cleaning and lint cleaning equipment configurations at various Roller gins in the Southwestern region. The Cotton Trash Identification Systems measurements are analyzed for repeatable and reliable trash measurements.
