Yield and Economics of Soil Conservaton Systems for Water Quality Preservation

Donald J. Boquet, LSU AgCenter, 2675 Hwy 865, Winnsboro, LA 71295 and Kenneth Paxton, Louisiana State University, Dep. Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness, Baton Rouge, LA 70803.

Crop yields and annual net returns per acre from a continuing multi-year study initiated at the LSU AgCenter Macon Ridge Research Station in Winnsboro, LA in 2001 will be presented. Cropping systems consist of two crops in one year or three crops in two years. Continuous mono-crop cotton is compared with various crop sequences of cotton, corn, soybean, grain sorghum and doublecropping with wheat (wheat and a summer crop harvested in the same year). All cropping systems are produced using practical BMPs for water quality protection and improvement. Systems are combinations of year-round ground cover consisting of a winter wheat cover/green manure crop or grain crop and crop residues grown on permanent beds with no-tillage.
