Comparison of Fiber Properties of Saw and Roller Ginned Lint Samples

Joseph T. Johnson, USDA-ARS, 141 Experiment Station Road, P.O. Box 345, Stoneville, MS 38776

Seed cotton samples from ten genotypes with a wide range of adaptation and maturity were grown at Keiser, AR, and Stoneville, MS. A 50 boll sample was hand harvested from each plot in each location and then divided in half with each subsample to be ginned on a laboratory saw gin or laboratory roller gin. From these samples numerous variables were measured including HVI length, strength, uniformity, and elongation, as well as micronaire. AFIS analysis was also performed on all samples to provide more detailed characterizations of fiber properties, particularly short fiber content as related to each of these genotypes, ginning method, and possible interactions.
