Henry David Gunter, Clemson University Extension Service, 300 Russell St., Darlington, SC 29532

The Darlington County Cotton Project: Growing Cotton With Poultry Litter Vs. Commercial Fertilizer is SARE sponsored project. This project was initiated by cotton producers in the county questioning the County Agent on the possibility of growing cotton using available Poultry Litter in light of Commercial Fertilizer costs rising. Once SARE project was granted, three locations on farms in the county was used over a three year period comparing the two fertility methods. Using soil and plant tissue tests, the two systems were compared throughout all three growing seasons. Of course yields were taken at years end and costs were compared. Soil Fertility and nematode results at project end will be compared for each system.
