The use of transgenic cotton weed control systems and lay-by treatments to control Texas smellmelon (Cucumis melo dudaim) and other problem weeds on the Texas Gulf Coast

Stephen D. Livingston, Roy D. Parker, Joseph D. Janak, Jr., and Stephen P. Biles. Texas Cooperative Extension, 10345 Agnes, Corpus Christi, TX 78406

Conventional, RR, RR-Flex and Ignite (LL) Cotton Systems were used to evaluate control of Texas smellmelon, morning glory sp., silverleaf nightshade, pigweed, desert horse purslane and Texas panicum Transgenic cotton systems still require base herbicides or supplemental weed control to suppress or control evasive weeds. The use of lay-by hoods is discussed with 3 years of results controlling Texas smellmelon and other escape weeds. Superior results were obtained with 2 pt/ac Lay-by Pro and 2 oz/ac Valor + 1 pt/ac RU WeatherMax. Other lay-by products providing suppression under hoods included Aim, GramoxoneMax, Ignite, Direx, RU WeatherMax and Goal. Work reported in Texas was conducted in Victoria, Calhoun, Jackson, and Nueces counties.
