Cultivar susceptibility to Verticillium wilt on the High Plains of Texas

Terry A. Wheeler, Texas Agricultural Experiment Station, Rt. 3, Box 219, Lubbock, TX 79403 and Greta L. Schuster, West Texas A&M University, Killgore Center 159, Canyon, TX 79016.

Small plot cultivar trials were conducted in Verticillium wilt fields located in five counties in the High Plains of Texas. At each site 16 to 36 cultivars were planted with four replications in a randomized complete block design. Adequate levels of Verticillium wilt developed at all sites to differentiate between some cultivars. Cultivar with the highest incidence of Verticillium wilt symptoms during August included: All-Tex (AT) Magnum RR, AT Warrior RR, Americot (Am) 262R, Am 8120, Am 821R, Beltwide Cotton Genetics (BCG) 28R, BCG 30R, BCG 245, BCG 295, DeltaPine (DP) 488BR, DP 449BR, DP 445BR, DP 5415RR, FiberMax 958, Stoneville (ST) 2454R, ST 4575BR, and ST 4793R. Cultivars with the lowest incidence of Verticillium wilt symptoms during August included: AT Atlas RR, AT Patriot RR, FiberMax (FM) 989BR, FM 989B2R, FM 989RR, FM 960BR, FM 960RR, FM 960B2R, NextGen (NG) 1553R, NG 2448R, Paymaster (PM) 2326RR, PM 2379RR, PM 2280BG/RR, and ST 3664R. There were no cultivars with high levels of resistance to Verticillium wilt.
